The spring night sky awaits in Liuyang.

Three spectacular weekend fireworks shows will light up the sky at Liuyang Sky Theater this March. The displays will take place on March 14, 21, and 28, each starting at 7:38 PM, bringing dazzling fireworks to brighten the spring evenings.

Tickets remain an affordable 1 yuan, and reservations must be made through the “Fireworks Cloud” WeChat mini-program. Visitors should note that entry requires the original physical ID card; electronic IDs or other documents cannot be recognized at the entrance.

A 1,400-Year Fireworks Tradition

Liuyang’s connection with fireworks dates back over 1,400 years.

During the Tang Dynasty, a craftsman named Li Tian from Hunan is believed to have invented early firecrackers by placing gunpowder inside bamboo tubes to ward off evil spirits. This innovation laid the foundation for China’s fireworks culture.

In 2006, the Liuyang fireworks-making technique was officially listed among China’s first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A Weekend Fireworks Phenomenon

Since launching the “Weekend Fireworks” brand in 2023, Liuyang has hosted 145 creative fireworks shows, attracting nearly 8 million visitors and generating over 20 billion yuan in related consumption.

In recent years, Liuyang has produced multiple viral fireworks moments:

  • The spectacular “Tree of Life” display went viral on social media, even receiving likes from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning and Tesla founder Elon Musk.

  • Creative drone-fireworks scenes such as “White Moon Brahma Star,” “Gate of the Sky,” and “Blue Meteor Shower” have captivated audiences and boosted sales of Liuyang’s signature fireworks products.

On February 21 this year, the “Blazing Spring: Chinese New Year in Fireworks” gala celebrating the Year of the Horse drew over 200,000 visitors from outside the city, driving more than 250 million yuan in spending on dining, accommodation, and other services.

During the show, 2,000 drones formed a celestial horse stepping across “seven-colored clouds”, a stunning moment broadcast nationwide on CCTV News, vividly capturing the festive spirit of the Chinese New Year.
